GENDER/PRONOUNS: CisFemale ( She / Her )
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual. Probably.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE:

Hypatia's can thank her Chinese and Hawaiian heritage for her dark curls and light brown skin, but she wishes she'd inherited her mother's eyes instead of her father's. She carries herself with the elegance of someone who took ballet classes growing up and, standing at 5'4'', she is best described as a petite girl.

Hypatia aesthetic is "prep school meets Manhattan." Pink with an edge. With status comes money, and even if she's never been very fashion forward, the young witch has always had the means to wear what she wants and has thus fallen into fashion. Classic looks that the young witch rocks are pink dresses with pink bomber jackets and cherry-red a-line skirts with converses. Skirts and blouses or modest dresses are often the norm. Hypatia loves anything that has pockets (it has pockets!) and has a small collection of enamel pins that pepper her designer messenger bag. Though she is barely aware of this, Hypatia steals plenty of her aesthetic choices from her mother. If Hypatia ever shows up wearing a shirt that is slightly too large for her, one with the sleeves rolled up, know that the piece has been stolen from Allana Song's closet.

With a costume change for every occasion, there are three items that remain constantly on Hypatia. One is mother’s watch, that never leaves her wrist. The second is a small gold necklace with the Song family crest pressed into the pendent. The rest of her jewelry is effervescent - though Hypatia would never be caught dead wearing something that was fake. The third is a crossword puzzle, she always has one tucked away in some pocket (thus explaining why she requires pockets on everything.)

Other signifiers litter the young witch's body.  There is a birthmark on the spot where her neck meets her spine that looks like an upside down rocket ship. On her right shoulder you can see a silvery scar that marks the time she fell off Hippogriff when she was first learning to ride. In what she now considers a big mistake, Hypatia has a moon tattoo on her wrist to match the sun one on her ex-boyfriend's - once upon a time she was That Chick.

At first glance, there are some that might think a strong gust of wind would blow her over. Those people would be wrong. Don't let her homage to elegance and poise fool you. This girl is more net than nectar.

HEIGHT: 5'4''
BUILD: Lean. Former ballet dancer and hippogriff rider. Smol but powerful.

PERSONALITY

What would others say is their most prominent personality trait — what's the first thing people notice about them?

She constantly carries herself as a ballerina on pointe shoes might. Distant they say, and there are moments when Hypatia does feel like something locked away in an ivory tower. There’s grace in her gait, but if you’re lucky to get close enough, you’ll see that the the strings that hold her up are made up of years and years of expectations. Hair always in a braid or in a bun, Hypatia follows the age old cliche of only letting her hair down in private.

At first glance, this distance comes with an icy chill that likens Hypatia's personality to a barren arctic wasteland. Her clothing suggests money, and such a presumption wouldn’t be wrong. She’s a Song, a known name if you’re the kind to keep an eye on the political trades. Being a pureblood means nothing in this country, but try telling that to a family that’s made it through elitism and nepotism. Hypatia has been given everything she wanted since she was a child, but the most extravagant gift her father ever bestowed on her was his expectations. When you meet her, one of the first thing you'll notice is this weight on her shoulders.

How would this character describe themself? What do they think are their best and worst qualities?

To be asked to describe herself is one of the worst things that Hypatia could ever image. Her weaknesses jump to her mind far more quickly than her strengths. For starters, she is a perfectionist and is determined to construct the perfect version of herself to present to the world. If she is indeed locked away in an ivory tower it’s partially because she’s chosen to stay there. She is happiest when she is on her own or in choice company, but when she’s around a crowd there is not a hair out of place. If there happens to be a hair out of place, good luck being the one to tell her. She is sensitive to receiving criticism and reacts poorly (read: explosively) when she does. Stray comments can stick with her for days and she's often one to get lost in her own head. She finds herself decaying with indecision, a by-product of a well-trained mind that refuses to trust even itself wholeheartedly. Externally, Hypatia fidgets. A lot. ‘Idle hands are the devil’s playings’ or something, and she keeps her notebook or crossword puzzle on hand to keep herself from getting too bored. She is a girl who is constantly going and, as such, she is subject to burn out.  But if you somehow manage to push past that anxiety, about six feet under all of that churning iciness, you’ll find a golden girl full of promise.

Despite all her weaknesses, Hypatia does have a few strengths that could let her shine - if only she let them. She has a strong sense of creativity and her spellwork is proof of that. She hopes to follow in her mother’s footsteps and work in research and development. The fact that she already knows this at the age of 15 speaks to her decisive nature and ambitious heart, and there’s very little that Hypatia takes on in life that she doesn’t follow through with determination and passion. Hypatia is more clever than most people give her credit for, though her introverted nature sometimes masks this. She can speak with warmth and passion about the things she cares about - a side of her those that she's a Heremeticisim T.A. for are familiar with. It should be noted though that all of her ambitions culminate into altruistic ideals: "Wizards! In space!" she gushes with wonder. At her happiest, she is rolling up her sleeves and getting to spell-crafting.

What drives them to action? Doing good? Getting rich? Receiving praise?

Girls like her, born with the world at their feet and silver spoons in their mouths, have no need for virtue —for doing good; there’s no need to play fair when the game’s already been won. It would’ve been easy—understandable, even—for the littlest daughter of Theon Song to live her life this way, believing that she was entitled to everything she was given and more. But greed leaves a sour taste in Hypatia's mouth and that puts her slightly out of sync with the rest of her family. Ultimately, as dedicated as Hyaptia is to preserving the image that is expected of her, deep-down, a fierce commitment to her own independence and moral compass drives what she does. Now she toes the line, as she tries to find a world where she can be both who she wants to be and who her family wants her to be. They tell her it’s impossible to make everyone happy, but here she is, dragging her feet with her own brand of viscousness.

How does this character handle tense social situations like arguments/fights?

This can be said about Hypatia: her bite is certainly worse than her bark.

Hypatia feels injustice, even of the most minor infraction, immensely, and each one feels like its tearing up her insides. She was raised to be both the storm and the fortress that withstands it, but on most day’s she’s just a stick of dynamite with a long fuse. She handles arguments and fights differently depending entirely on who’s watching. In public? A tight smile and she goes quiet. After, she'll spend days inventing the perfect way to exact revenge and it’s best to sleep with one eye open.

In private, she can be brutal. Like a kettle, releasing a whistle after too much pressure has built up, Hypatia will strike. Her wand will be out in the blink of an eye, a bit of magic shot your way. If you’re lucky, you might even be on the receiving end of a spell Hypatia modified and you'll get to see her innovation up close. Hypatia will tell no one, but she finds moments like these, this sheer bit of recklessness, utterly exhilarating. She's acting from a place of pure impulsiveness and she is completely herself - expectations and societal restrictions be damned.

Really, this habit of picking fights in private could probably be cured if she just let herself be herself more.

Anyway, expect apologies to come few and far in between, but when they are dealt, they are dealt with only honesty. Shaking hands and making up on something she doesn’t agree with will never happen. The best you’re to get is a nod.

What is their sense of humor like? Are they chronically unserious? How's their comedic timing? Do they hate potty humor?

Hypatia has a sharp and observational sense of humor if you can get her to open up but, at the moment, her diary is her fiercest and only critic. On the whole, she has a low tolerance for low brow humor and believes that silence is greatest punishment for bad jokes.

How social are they and, introvert or extrovert, what sorts of people do they gravitate toward?

At Malstrom, Hypatia was the token introvert of an extroverted lot and was drawn to a meaner sort of crowd. Here at Peckenpaugh, she is trying to make better choices and keeps to herself instead. Uninhibited by her baggage and demanding school schedule, Hypatia would be drawn to inventors and revolutionaries - thus making Deeplurk the best house for her.

SKILLS

LANGUAGES:

English: fluent.

Mandarin: proficient. Her father's first language, she grew up speaking this in the household.

Hawaiian: conversational. Picked up what she heard from her mother.

HOBBIES:

Hexes: Quickly gaining a reputation for being the witch that'll break a hex or make one for you. Depending on who you are, there might be a small price involved.

Crossword puzzles: Or really, any logic or solving puzzles. These are her favorites. Even better if she can carry them around in her pockets for when she gets bored. An occupied Hypatia is less trouble than a bored one.

Muggle puzzles: She enjoys the heck out of these. Come over to her room, she’s packed away a decent amount under her bed. She loves the silence that they bring, so don’t expect much conversation if you do agree to help her solve one.

Cartography: Hypatia is attracted to the method and attention required to draw a map and gets the same pleasure from writing out the formula for a spell. She’s only recently gotten into the hobby, but she finds it helps her unwind. This goes hand in hand with her love for hiking and -

Stargazing: Have a favorite story about the constellations? Tell her, she wants to hear them all. Hypatia has been big on looking to the stars ever since she decided she's going to be one of the first witches in space.

Flying: Some people think the best in the shower, Hypatia thinks the best while flying. For most of her life, it’s been a rather independent hobby - seeing as she’s never been one for team sports. Things are changing this year as she’s signed up to be the reserve on the Quidditch team.

Hippogriff Riding: Perhaps the greatest indicator of her privileged upbringing is that Hypatia can even put something like hippogriff riding on her list of hobbies. But there it is. She went to a summer camp for it and everything when she was younger. She participated and placed in dressage competitions and was even part of a Saddle Club.

Reading: She likes books. While she wasn’t sheltered from muggle media by her pureblood family, she certainly had less access to it. Now that she’s going to Peckenpaugh, she’s finally catching up her on reading and watch list. What the heck is a Boss Baby?

SKILLS:

Hermeticism: Maybe it's too much to say Hypatia has a gift for the science of magic, but there are days where it seems that way. She gives it the patience and attention it requires and much of her free time is spent reading up on it. She finds that it brings her closer to her mother. This year, Hypatia is the Hermeticism T.A. and she can't wait.

Fighting For Your Cause: This seems to be one way to override her tendency to be an extremely private person. Have a cause? If you can get Hypatia on board, she'll come out of her ivory tower to fight for it. She’ll coordinate a fundraiser for it. She’ll make lists and put up flyers and have people sign petitions and do a bake sale for it. Hypatia believes in things deeply.

Pureblood Elite: A walking Who’s Who of the pureblood elite.

A Mean Left Hook: What she lacks in strength, she makes up in heart. A lady never gets her hands dirty, until she has to.

Athletic: Though she no longer has time for Hippogriff riding and ballet, both these things have made her an active person. Last year, Adventure Club helped scratch that particular itch. AC along with Quidditch this year should do the same.
HISTORY

FAMILY:
Theon Song: 52 years old. Father. Formerly a senior member of the DMLE, now holds one of the American seats on the International Confederation of Wizards. The Song family has been tangled up in the ICW for as long as anyone can remember and it's rumored that Theon got his job because of his father. He describes himself as a "family man" - where "family" means "essential power structure" instead of "center of love an comfort." Theon never remarried after his wife's passing. Publicly, he's been playing the role of the grieving widower ever since. Privately, his eyes stay dry. Theon is a man who believes that the ends justify the means. He loves his children, he loves his legacy. He currently lives in New York and manages to visit extended family in China at least once a year.

Allana Song: Mother. Gone missing, recently declared deceased. From a pureblood family. Of American, specifically Hawaiian, descent. A Peckenpaugh alumni. A former Unspeakable, Allana moved on to become one of the lead creative executives at Tempus before she passed. Described as "a bright witch."

Similar to the Department of Mysteries, Tempus is a private firm that is dedicated to the exploration of love, space, thought, time and death in the Wizarding World. As these endeavors are less likely to be federally funded in America, private firms like Tempus exist alongside the Department of Mysteries (capitalism!). A muggle analog might be: Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Marius Song: 26 years old. Malstrom Academy alumnus. In 2016 when the Department of Magical Law Enforcement underwent restructuring, Marius was one of the Hit Wizards put on leave. His investigation is still ongoing and Theon is keeping a close eye on it. Marius is cold and severe, much like his father. He currently lives in New York and is recently engaged.

Cassius Song: 21 years old. Malstrom Academy alumnus. A junior executive at the International Confederation of Wizards Quidditch Committee, an international regulatory body, subject to the International Confederation of Wizards. Cassius was a former Quidditch all-star at Malstrom Academy. He's extroverted and outgoing. Hypatia's favorite sibling, if she had to pick - possibly because they are closet to each other in age. He also lives in New York.

Tatiana Song: 48 years old. Theon's sister, Hypatia's aunt. Married, mother of twins. Holds one of China's seats on the International Confederation of Wizards. Tatiana is less uptight than Theon and she and Hypatia frequently correspond through post-cards. Tatiana lives in Beijing and at least a portion of Hypatia's childhood summers were spent visiting her aunt. Tatiana last visited the States for Allana's funeral and has been sending more post-cards since. She's the one who taught Hypatia how to ride Hippogriffs in her youth and is known in the Song family for having an incredible sweet tooth.
BACKGROUND:
Hypatia Song comes into this world under a bright new moon, the third child of this branch of the Song family. Her older siblings, Marius and Cassius, are ten and five years her senior respectively and her birth is met with the same happiness theirs is. After all, to be a Song is sacred and powerful.

Like all the Song’s before her, Hypatia is born into old money. Theon Song holds a seat on the International Confederation of Wizards, a vocation that keeps him in New York. Allana Song is a lead executive at Tempus. Both are damn good witches. Theon’s ancestors - like Allana’s - immigrated to this country, carrying both the old world and its centuries-old magic on their backs. The two are deeply entrenched in the magic of their respective, pureblood bloodlines and it is expected that Hyaptia will be the same.

Hypatia grows up amongst the brownstones of the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She, like her brothers, is homeschooled until she is old enough to go to Maelstrom Academy. Her brothers are hard-working, her mother is brilliant, her father is stern and unforgiving. Status, Hypatia learns, comes with expectations.

Freshman year at Malstrom Academy is a bright, new chapter. Hypatia’s magic, in its wild youth, will not be contained. The young witch tries to steady herself, tries not to be overwhelmed by all the books and courses and magic and so much learning. But after a childhood of being homeschooled, she finds herself living life in excess. She parties a little too hard and makes bad choices. She grows a little and figures herself out. She learns that she has her mother’s mind for invention and she has her father’s unpredictable temper.

2015 happens and ten months later there is a tectonic shift in the Ministry. It sends aftershocks through the Song family and reveals cracks in a foundation that existed long before these trying times. Allana takes her research and moves to West Virginia, though she never signs the divorce papers for the sake of appearances. Cassius and Marius, just about adults in their own right and no longer living at home, barely feel this earthquake. Hypatia, almost 14, sees it happen up close. As much as Hypatia hates that she feels like a child amongst this all, she begs to follow her mother because she hates the idea of living without her even more. Divorce, whether Theon and Allana use the technical term or not, is a bitch. Allana enrolls Hypatia in Peckenpaugh to start that September despite Theon’s displeasure and life continues. Hypatia tries to stay steady despite the tremors that go running through her life.

September barely comes to pass when a Hypatia wakes up to an empty home. Her mother, gone. A business trip they tell her, Allana does important work after all and she’s needed elsewhere. Hyaptia believes them when they first tell her this, and she believes them again four months later, even when the worry begins to gnaw and she’s yet to hear from her mother. This pattern will continue, and she’ll keep believing what she’s told for at least another year. In that moment though, custody of Hypatia returns to Theon. Family, Hypatia learns, is something you cannot choose.

Sophomore year. 'Steady Hypatia,’ once a command, a warning, becomes a mantra. She gets a chance to reinvent herself at the new school, without having to stand in the shadows of her brothers. Peckenpaugh is different. Maybe it’s because people are automatically curious about the new and strange, but Peckenpaugh feels better. The friends are easier to make here, the teachers more interested in here. She’s a Deeplurk now and that is something that feels very right. She tries to keep her friends from Malstrom, but it’s hard.

There is no still sign of her mother and there are nights when she wonders if her father is to blame. During Christmas, Hypatia explores Allana’s notes on the study of magic of time and space. She discovers one of her mother’s watches tucked away in a desk and starts wearing it.

The shine of being a new kid starts wearing off as the new year rings in, but Hypatia doesn’t mind. She draws a few maps and she solves a few puzzles. She gets into a few fights, though they manage to stay of her record. She studies, hard, and one day Hypatia finds her calling in her Hermeticism class: she wants to invent the spell that’s going to let Wizards apparate in space. She looks at the world with new starry-eyes.

The final school bell rings and Hyaptia returns to Manhattan for the summer. In the heat of July, the Songs hold a funeral for Allana even though there is no body. Theon’s eyes stay dry and Hypatia inherits her notebooks - though she doesn’t understand a single scratch of them. The sun ripens through the sky as the summer comes to a close. Hypatia breaks up with her Malstrom boyfriend and wonders if this is how change happens. Time, Hypatia learns, doesn’t stop for grief.

Steady, Hypatia.
Now, her junior year begins. Mother gone, recently single, her family strangers, Hypatia feels steady no more. She struggles to keep her head afloat amidst it all. Sometimes, she feels like she has little more than her name and her magic. She pours herself into her ambitions because, other than it being a distraction, she know’s it’s the one thing that keeps her heart beating. Steadiness, Hypatia is coming to learn, often demands loss.
MISCELLANEOUS

WAND: Aspen, thunderbird tail feather, 13 inch. It is said that wands with thunderbird tail feathers are able to sense danger and cast spells on their own. In the midst of an argument, look to Hypatia's wand. As stoic and icy as the girl might be, her wand is the true tell.

FAMILIAR: A lesser bamboo bat named 'Jie.' This very bat has supposedly been handed down through the Song family for generations. Hypatia was told that the spirit of Theon’s great grandfather lives on within him and she doesn't dare disbelieve it. Marius inherited Jie after Theon, then Cassius after him, and now Hyaptia continues the tradition. Hypatia would hate to have Jie die on her watch after supposedly a century of surviving. She has a bamboo plant next to her bed for him to nest in. Sometimes, it feels like he's silently judging her.

CAREER GOALS: While she feels obligated to join the MACUSA like her brothers, what Hypatia really wants is to do exactly what her mother did. She would love to be hired by a firm like Tempus to research and develop new spellcraft, specifically spellcraft in relation to space and time. Hypatia's the gal that wants to find a way to put wizards in space and she wants to be one of the first witches to go to the moon. Really want to get her to open up? Ask her about her ideas on space and time travel; ask her about muggle rocketships and how she thinks THEY SUCK.

PART-TIME JOB: N/A

CLASSES:

Charms: ⭐⭐⭐⭐Hypatia knew she wanted to be a T.A. this year, and every time she's in a Charms class, she still feels a flash embarrassment for picking Hermeticism over Charms. While she has an affinity for the subject and while she greatly admires Guzenhauser as the Head of Deeplurk, Hypatia feels a deeper connection to Hermeticism and sees a future in it. Plus, if she’s being completely honest, she doesn’t very much appreciate Guzenhauser’s “A for effort” mentality. She’s avoiding outright confrontation on the matter though.

Potions: ⭐⭐⭐ Pardon her french, but any bitch can stir a cauldron. Hypatia will do the reading and learn the curriculum, but at the end of the day the subject fails to truly grab her attention because of its lack of what she considers true magic - magic that comes from within the wizard. Hypatia is in the class because her family greatly influenced her decision in taking it. She was told if she had any intention of joining the MACUSA like her brothers, Potions was a must. Hypatia signed up out of familial obligation and the hopes that it would be one less thing for her father to frown about. Her dislike for the class has only strengthened since she joined on as Ms. Altzier's Hermeticism T.A.

Transfiguration (H): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐One of her favorite subjects. She enjoys working out the geometry of a spell and then taking that math and figuring out the practical application of it. Her hand is raised in every discussion and she is a frequent contributor. Plus, Ms. Min joined Peckenpaugh the same years as Hypatia and so the young witch has always thought them to be kindred spirits. Despite the dry material that Transfiguration is known for, Hypatia thinks there is never a dull day in this class.

Astronomy (H): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ While she admires Mr. Hobgood’s adventurous spirit and is a fan of the frequent field trips, Hypatia is the kind of student to be annoyed when she stays up meticulously studying all night only to learn the test has been cancelled because a certain teacher was too bored to write it up. In the case of Astronomy, Hypatia has a greater love for the subject than the teacher.

Defense Against The Dark Arts: ⭐⭐Defense Against the Dark Arts is Hypatia's worst subject because she built up the least foundation for it at Malstrom. The young witch picked it out of pure curiosity. When it comes to spell-work, she’s much more inclined to offensive spells than defensive spells. She has a great respect for the theory aspect of Mr. Purcell’s curriculum but she dislikes how it lacks practical application. When there are so many enthusiastic teachers at Peckenpaugh, it’s hard to make room for Mr. Purcell on the favorite list. Low-key, Hyaptia gets bored in this class and spends the time day-dreaming how even she could run it better.

Hermeticism (H, TA) : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Hypatia feels most the alive in this class. It's as simple as that. Where else do you get to truly study the craft of magic? Hypatia is rarely a team player and but her genuine love for the subject overcomes this instinct - that’s why she chose to become a TA. She is fiercely protective of Ms. Altizer’s no-nonsense classroom and she will defend her against any student who dares talk smack about it.

History of Magic: ⭐⭐⭐Hypatia is less than enthused about History of Magic but it was suggested for a future in research and development. "I guess," Hypatia said and added the course to her schedule. She just hopes that Ms. Dorkins doesn't waste too much of her time.

Symbology (H): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐After Hermeticism, Symbology is her favorite subject. It is also one of the subjects that will bring her closest to her career goal. Hypatia is excited to start sigil and glyph making this year. Not to mention, rumor has it that Tulio Stirling was once an Unspeakable. Hypatia has been curious to learn more about this career path ever since she learned her mother used to be one.

Arithmancy: ⭐⭐⭐⭐The feeling Hypatia gets from soaring hundreds of feet in the sky is the exact same feeling she gets when she enters the Arithmancy class every two weeks. It's exhilarating, freeing, and there's always the chance you might die. Every night before a scheduled Arithmancy class, the witch gives herself a pep talk in front of her mirror. Arithmancy is no joke and Hypatia breaks a sweat to keep up.

EXTRA-CURRICULARS:

AV Club: What started off as an attempt to get her name into Mr. Hobgood’s good books has bloomed into a genuine fondness for those at the radio station. The AV Club is the first team she's felt a part of in awhile. Hypatia helps coordinate the schedule and keeps the programming organized.

Adventure Club: Possibly the only purely selfish choice on her her schedule, Hypatia signed up for the Adventure Club simply because it sounded fun. For those who know the witch, for her to take on something that does not have ulterior motives or is not somehow tied into her overall ambitions is really something. She’s the resident cartographer of the club.

Quidditch: Reserve. Over the final weeks of summer, Hypatia caught wind of the fact that her now ex-boyfriend (you know, lets just name him Jacob) was taking on the role of Quidditch Captain this year at Malstrom. Realizing she couldn't let him be better at her than something, she immediately signed up to be the reserve. When asked why she wanted to join Quidditch at Peckenpaugh, Hypatia looked captain Howdy Stoppelbein dead in the eye and said “revenge.”

Arithletes: The perfect place for both her flair for competition and her love for homework. Hypatia's trying to get better at the curveball stats this year as that's what tripped her up last May. In general, the young witch is enthusiastic about Arithletes and Dr. Huang. Plus, she thinks it'll look great on her resume.

Duelling and Wandwork: She’s there to let off steam and maybe slip in a new spell or two of her own invention.

SORTING:
Standing at 5’4’’, Hypatia felt like the squat wooden doorway of the Sorting Hall was made for her. As a transfer student, her sorting was lumped in at the end of the new, incoming freshman class but that's something she barely noticed. Unlike her sorting at Malstrom, she had no siblings to tell her what to expect and so it was a completely genuine experience. Hypatia took her time to enjoy the seasons and she was taken by the magic of it.  The Sorting Hall suggested Thorntrail for her, but after a second of hesitation, Hypatia chose Deeplurk, her mother's alma mater.
